MAPh, formerly known as MGA (Monash Gallery of Art), established its name more than thirty years ago at a time when the gallery collected and exhibited all types of visual art, including but not limited to paintings and sculpture, and photography.

Over the years, MGA’s collection has come to be solely dedicated to Australian photography and has since established itself as the leading public gallery specialising in collecting Australian photographs and exhibiting photography.

We are Australia’s leading museum exclusively dedicated to the collection, conservation, promotion and exhibition of photography.

MAPh remains the only public institution in the world solely dedicated to collecting Australian photographs. Our unique focus makes us one of the most culturally significant photography institutions in the country.
