Charles Bayliss (1850–1897) was a leading colonial photographer in Australia during the 1870s and 1880s. He was born in Suffolk, England in 1850 and arrived in Melbourne with his family in 1854. He is particularly well-known for his series of panoramas, promoting the colony of New South Wales to the rest of the world through expansive views of hitherto unfamiliar landscapes. Using large wet-plate negatives, these striking views were exhibited internationally, including the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia, the Paris Exposition Universelle Internationale of 1878 and Sydney's International Exhibition of 1879–80. Bayliss acquired his own studios with various addresses in Sydney from 1876 to 1900.
