Gordon Bennett (1955–2014) was a Brisbane-based artist who graduated from Queensland College of Art in 1988. He primarily worked as a painter, but he used various media including photography. As a student, Bennett was versed in postmodern cultural practices and his early work offered an indigenous perspective on the aesthetic strategies of appropriation and mimicry. His artwork is particularly pertinent to the cultural debates staged around Australia’s Bicentennial in 1988, and he continued to explore themes of identity and race throughout his career.
