Peter Dombrovskis (1945–96) grew up in Fern Tree, Tasmania and began taking photographs in the 1960s. He was inspired by the natural environment as well as the work of photographers such as Olegas Truchanas, who became his mentor. His practice focused on remote areas of Tasmania and his works were often produced with the intention of drawing viewers’ attention to the beauty of Tasmania’s wilderness in order to inspire its protection. Dombrovskis' photographs have thus played a part in preserving various Tasmanian natural places, including the Franklin River. In 2003, Dombrovskis was the first Australian to be inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame.
