Nici Cumpston (1963– ) is an Adelaide-based artist, curator and educator with Afghan, English, Irish and Barkindji Aboriginal heritage. She studied Applied and Visual Art at the North Adelaide School of Art, attaining a diploma in 1989 and an advanced diploma in 1994. During this time she learnt how to hand-colour photographs with transparent oil paints. Then, after working for six years in the South Australian police force's photographic department, Cumpston completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts with Honours at the University of South Australia between 1998 and 2004, majoring in photography while also lecturing at the Tauondi Aboriginal Community College. Cumpston has exhibited her works widely and is known for her large-scale, often hand-coloured, landscape photographs that explore the waterways of her Barkindji ancestry.
