Nanette Carter (b. Australia 1954) studied first year photography at Prahran Technical College in 1974 then completed a Diploma (1977) and Post Graduate Diploma (1980) in Fine Art at the Phillip Institute of Technology, majoring in photography. Her practice explored feminist issues with autobiographical overtones and she exhibited her work widely between 1981 and 1995. In 1984, while working as a photographer, Carter completed a Bachelor of Arts at La Trobe University, which was followed by further academic study at the University of Melbourne. She ceased practicing as a photographer in the early 1990s to pursue her career as a lecturer in design history.
