Maree Clarke (1961– ) is a Melbourne-based multidisciplinary artist. She was born in Swan Hill and is connected to the traditional lands of the Mutti Mutti, Wamba Wamba, Yorta Yorta and Boonwurrung peoples. Clarke came to photography in the 1990s when she received photographic training from Viva Gibb as part of the Koori Photography Project. Clarke’s practice revolves around the regeneration and reclamation of Indigenous cultural practices, particularly relating to Australia’s southeast. She has exhibited widely in Australia and overseas, and in 2021 a major survey of her work was held at the National Gallery of Victoria entitled Maree Clarke: ancestral memories.
