HOPPÉ PORTRAITS: Society, Studio & Street

Cecil Beaton called him ‘The Master’ and he was described as the most famous photographer in the world in the 1920s. The rediscovered works of Emil Otto Hoppé (British, German born, 1878-1972) come to Melbourne for the first time at Monash Gallery of Art from 9 June to 29 July 2012.

Hoppé took pictures of the most famous cultural identities, literary figures, artists and dancers of the era. This exhibition features remarkable portraits of figures such as King George VI and the Queen Mother, Albert Einstein, Fritz Lang, Benito Mussolini, Ezra Pound, Jacob Epstein and Margot Fonteyn. Not to mention Hoppé’s exploration of the rapidly changing streets of London, often using a hidden camera.
