Wesley Stacey: The wild thing
Wesley Stacey is a living legend of environmental photography. In the 1970s he turned his back on the bright lights of Sydney and set up camp in the wilderness of the NSW south coast. For over 40 years he has lived in the ‘great outdoors’, using photography to explore and connect with the ecological complexity of the Australian landscape.
The wild thing, curated from the MGA’s own photography collection, surveys four decades of Stacey’s work. From his lively colour snapshots to his epic black-and-white panoramas, Stacey pays tribute to the wildness at the heart of our existence on Earth.

Gael Newton is the former Senior Curator of Photography, National Gallery of Australia, and Curator of Stacey's first survey exhibition held at the NGA in 1991.

Wesley Stacey: Signing the land / Segni Sul Paesaggio 1993
Signing the land is an accordion-fold book of Wesley Stacey’s photographs that stretches to over 10 metres when fully expanded. Combining images taken over an 18 year period in both Australia and Italy, it explores the traces left behind by humans on the landscape. From the scratching of graffiti on a headstone in Italy as a sign of remembrance, to the shells left behind on a beach indicating a traditional eating place in Australia, Stacey’s panoramic photographs invite you to search for the marks on the land.
The last remaining stock of these softcover books have made their way from Stacey’s bush camp to MGA. Books will be available to purchase at the exhibition launch for $50 and Stacey will be available to sign them for you; any remaining books will be $55 for the duration of the exhibition.
