Charles Justin is the co-founder of the Justin Art House Museum (JAHM) in Prahran. Justin Art House Museum is an initiative of Charles and Leah Justin, who are passionate collectors of contemporary art. Through their house museum they hope to share both their collection and their passion for art with the public. Charles and Leah Justin have been collecting contemporary art for over 40 years, more seriously over the last 20 years. Their collection comprises over 250 works and continues to grow. The collection includes a diverse spectrum of art practice including painting, sculpture, works on and from paper, and photography. There is a strong emphasis on digital and video work. The collection is broad based and includes established and emerging artists practicing both locally and internationally.
Utilising photography as her primary medium, Janelle’s practice explores the internal and external conflicts that arise from growing up in multicultural Australia and navigating it’s evolving cultural landscape. Her work looks into the sense of displacement and ‘otherness’ felt between both her heritage and cultural upbringing, questioning notions of identity and acceptance.
In 2013 Janelle became the second female, and youngest winner of the National Photographic Portrait Prize presented by the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. In 2014 she was one of the inaugural recipients of the Graduate in Residence presented by RMIT’s Diploma of Photoimaging, and in 2015 Janelle was a finalist in the Head on Portrait Prize and the only Australian finalist in the LensCulture Portrait Prize. Represented by dianne tanzer gallery + projects, Janelle has exhibited nationally and internationally with her work held in private and public collections.
Sophia Cai is an emerging curator and arts writer with a particular interest in Asian art history as well as craft-based contemporary art practices. She completed a Masters with Distinction in History of Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London in 2014, supported by a Friends of the Courtauld Scholarship, and previously graduated from the Australian National University with a First-Class Honours degree in Art History and Curatorship in 2011, receiving the Janet Wilkie Art History Honours Prize for her final thesis on Chinese contemporary photography.
In addition to her tertiary qualifications, Sophia has gained experience in a major museums, independent spaces, and commercial galleries in Australia and the UK including the National Gallery of Australia (Canberra), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Sydney), the Art Gallery of New South Wales (Sydney), Craft (Melbourne), Ian Potter Museum of Art (Melbourne) and Serpentine Galleries (London). She is currently the Public Programs Coordinator at the Australian Tapestry Workshop in Melbourne.
Helen Frajman is an independent editor and curator of photography and since 1993, the Director and Publisher at M.33, Melbourne, an independent organisation which exhibits and publishes contemporary photography.
M.33 have published some of Australia’s most interesting photographers including Jane Burton, Cherine Fahd, Darren Sylvester, Konrad Winkler, Peter Milne, Drew Pettifer and Janina Green.
Helen also represents a number of photographic artists and offers a consultancy service to artists and collections and businesses – including exhibition management and marketing, photographic editing, collections advice and valuations.
