THE TAA/AUSTRALIAN AIRLINES MUSEUM: PRESERVING A UNIQUE PART OF AUSTRALIA’S DOMESTIC AVIATION HISTORY
Terry Masocco is the vice-president of the TAA/Australian Airlines Museum.
The museum is dedicated to the preservation of an important era in Australian domestic aviation by displaying the history, growth and contributions made by Trans-Australia Airlines (most well known as TAA) and Australian Airlines.
A group of long-serving airline staff banded together in the early 1970s and formed the TAA 25 Year Club which by its constitution is charged with the preservation, display and storage of many thousands of airline items that have been found, collected and donated since its inception. The collection is now the property of the TAA/Australian Airlines 25 Year Club which in turn manages the Museum.
The museum identifies the achievements of a once great airline and the contributions it made to the nation’s development and aviation in general. TAA achieved many Australian aviation and world firsts.
The museum collection is diverse and includes the first credit card issued, models and images of all the aircraft that flew in the airline’s colours, engines, uniforms from every era, cockpit and technical simulation equipment, cut away models of components used for engineering training, photographs, advertising posters and associated marketing memorabilia.
Many of the volunteers who act as tour guides worked in the airline and are able to provide first-hand commentary about the exhibits and associated history.
The museum strives to present and help recall an era in Australia’s aviation history that can never be repeated.
