Gareth Syvret, MGA Associate Curator will give a talk about his career as a photographic curator, archivist and historian; first impressions of MGA; and a glimpse of what’s coming up in the exhibitions program for the year ahead.
Gareth Syvret is Associate Curator at Monash Gallery of Art. Gareth is Photographic Curator and Archivist and holds a PhD in Photographic History from De Montfort University, UK. His research interests include photographic history and practice in island cultures and he has curated numerous photography exhibitions that often connect contemporary practice with photographic archives. In his former role at the Société Jersiaise Photographic Archive, St Helier, Jersey (UK) Gareth was responsible for an archive of 120,000 images, spanning from 1840s to contemporary practice. His recent curatorial projects include: Capital, Ballarat International Foto Biennale ((2019) co-curated with Naomi Cass); Lewis Bush Trading Zones, Piquet House, Jersey (2018); Entre Nous: Claude Cahun and Clare Rae, Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne (2018); Jonny Briggs Unpalatable Truths, CCA Galleries International, Jersey (2017); Tanja Deman Sunken Garden, CCA Galleries International, Jersey (2017); Atlantus, multiple venues in Europe and USA (2015); and Martin Parr Liberation, Jersey Museum and Art Gallery (2014).
