Learn about the historical albumen printing process whilst making and printing your own albumen photographic prints.
In response to the significant and stunning historic albumen printed photographs on display in our current exhibition Visions of India: from the colonial to the contemporary we are running a session teaching the historical process from start to finish in this full day workshop.
Participants will learn about the history of this early photographic printing method covering all aspects of the process including albumen fermentation, coating, sensitising, exposing, and developing, and have the opportunity to print their own albumen photographs.
This workshop is facilitated by MGA Education and Public Engagement Coordinator Jessica Schwientek and alternative photographer Keira Hudson.
Albumen printing is a contact printing process that requires monochromatic negatives of the same size that they will be printed. Participants can bring their own negatives with the best results coming from medium and large format negatives. Both analogue and digitally printed negatives can be used in the process.
MGA can assist in creating digital printed negatives for participants to use during the workshop upon request. To allow sufficient time to arrange negative printing this must be arranged no later than March 12 by contacting workshop facilitator Jessica Schwientek.
- All materials provided except where listed
- BYO lunch (or dine in the on-site café)
- Bring any black-and-white negatives you have and wish to make prints of – keep in mind that this is a contact printing method, and all prints will be the same size as your negatives – medium and large format negatives are recommended
- Wear suitably comfortable clothing, disposable aprons provided
Please note: This process uses albumen from eggs. Please do not book if you are vegan or have an egg allergy. Participants must be 18 years of age or older.
