In celebration of Pride events across Australia join MGA Director, Anouska Phizacklea with Tamara Dean, Ayman Kaake and David Rosetzky as they dissect the complexities of identity, working to challenge social and cultural norms and exploring collaborative photographic projects with LGBTQI+ communities.
Tamara Dean (1976– ) is a critically acclaimed photo media artist who works with photography, installation and performance to explore the relationship between humans and the natural world. Dean’s practice is the subject of the survey exhibition Leave only footprints that is currently on show at MGA. Included in the survey is Dean’s About face: are you a boy or a girl? that comprises 11 portraits of sitters who each have been described or identify as androgynous. The title is inspired by a comment made by one the sitters who has been asked ‘are you a boy or a girl?’ or ‘are you a man or a woman?’.
Ayman Kaake was born in Tripoli, Lebanon and moved to Australia in 2011. He purchased his first camera in 2015 and since then has produced images that explore the complexity of starting life in another country. His inner landscapes present as staged self-portraits, that tenderly delve into feelings of uncertainty and isolation, creating other worldly images.
David Rosetzky (1970– ) is a Melbourne-based artist who studied painting at Victoria College in Prahran and completed a PhD in Fine Art at Monash University in Caulfield. Rosetzky works across mediums which encompass photography, video and installation to explore themes of identity, subjectivity and the psychology of interpersonal relationships. In 2020 Rozetsky was commissioned to produce a body of work responding to key issues facing the Monash LGBTQI+community titled Portrait of Monash | the ties that bind.
