In late 1978, Rod McNicol moved into his warehouse space in Smith Street, Fitzroy. For over forty years McNicol has incorporated this space into his work, both as a location from which to draw his subjects and as an aesthetic context in which to photograph them. The studio has provided a consistent background for his portraits, which have featured friends, artists, musicians, writers and a myriad of other vibrant souls from his village.
McNicol’s warehouse property is now earmarked for development, compelling the artist to leave his creative home of many years. Rod McNicol takes us through the evolution of his work in Rod McNicol and his portraits 2024, a short film (19 mins) by Yanni Florence, part of a documentary series about photographers.
Yanni Florence will be present for a short Q&A after the screening.
