CIRCULATING FLESH:
THE CADAVER, THE COMATOSE & THE CHIMERA
In an age of circulating flesh, body hacking, gene splicing, gender reassignment and prosthetic augmentation what a body is and how a body operates becomes problematic. Liminal spaces of the human are proliferating where the cadaver, the comatose and the chimera exist simultaneously whilst cryogenically preserved bodies await reanimation at some imagined future. Organs are extracted and exchanged. Limbs from a dead body are attached and reanimated on a living body. The face of the donor stitched to the recipient becomes a Third Face. With Organ Printing, organs will be in excess. Organs will be awaiting bodies. Organs Without Bodies.
Stelarc's presentation will discuss the implications of the interaction of the body and technology and will include videos of performances and animations, showing the ear on his arm and demonstrating the Prosthetic Head and the muscle stimulation system.
Stelarc is one of Australia's most eminent performance artists. For three decades he has suspended, visually probed, and acoustically amplified his body. Between 1976-1988 Stelarc completed 25 body suspension performances with hooks piercing his skin. He has used medical instruments, prosthetics, robotics, Virtual Reality systems, the Internet and biotechnology to explore alternate, intimate and involuntary interfaces with the body.
