Louis Porter is an English photographer who has been based in Melbourne since 2001. His Australian colour series is a visual response to his adopted home. With the fresh eyes of a foreigner, he has carried his camera with him while exploring the suburbs of greater Melbourne for the new, the interesting and the strange. Porter finds his subject matter in the process of exploring the streets, using a film which is extremely sensitive to strong colour. There is no digital manipulation of the image before it is printed. In this respect, these photographs document candid encounters between Porter and the suburban environment. From John Brack to Barry Humphries, we are used to seeing Australian artists engage with Melbourne's sprawling suburbs in a sardonic way. Porter, however, re-discovers our everyday environment as a lively dreamscape, full of quirky possibilities and kooky convergences.
