Clare Jellie’s photographic series, When the sun sleeps explores the small Australian coastal town of Warrnambool, and the stories embedded within its social and environmental ecologies. While growing up in the area, Jellie felt torn between staying and leaving, between travelling and dwelling, between city and country. Through the series, Jellie addresses her ambivalent feelings about growing up in a typical regional Australian town, while also connecting with the people who have chosen to embrace a small-town lifestyle. The work provides a contrast to the usual touristic and clichéd imagery of Warrnambool, showing grey skies, stagnant streets, and a desolate coastline. Drawing on the traditions of long-form documentary photography, Jellie has created a series that both questions and celebrates rural living.

MGA exhibition space, the Atrium Gallery, provides emerging artists with an opportunity to showcase their practice to MGA’s audiences. The Atrium Gallery is situated between MGA and the Wheelers Hill Library and is open Monday to Friday from 10.00am to 6.00pm; Saturdays from 9.00am to 4.00pm; Sundays 10.00am to 4.00pm.

UPDATE 27 May 2021: MGA is closed due to recent restrictions and this exhibition is now closed.
