Narelle Autio (1969– ) studied visual arts at the University of South Australia before embarking on a career as a photojournalist. She worked for The Advertiser in Adelaide then travelled abroad in 1994, working in England for a number of newspapers before returning to Australia in 1998 where she worked as a staff photographer for The Sydney Morning Herald until 2003. Autio began exhibiting her photographic prints in 2000 and has since exhibited widely throughout Australia and overseas, particularly gaining a reputation for her images of Australian coastal life and her photographs taken below the surface of the water. She is also known for her widely exhibited series produced in collaboration with photographer Trent Parke. Autio’s works are held in major Australian public and private collections, and she has received multiple awards, including the prestigious Leica Oskar Barnack Award in 2002.
