(Un)motherhood, (in)fertility2022
Artist statement: The image is part of the ongoing project titled The motherhood that wasn’t.
I’m infertile. While I never wished to be a mother, the concept of infertility is part of my quotidian reality. I question if this is due to social expectations or a biological need. Since having children has never been an intention, my infertility should not cause any emotional conflict, nonetheless, it does. My body, it seems, has failed to conform to expectations of a person who was born with a reproductive apparatus.
Drawing from a narrative of the self, I aim to understand the phenomenological and psychosomatic expression of infertility caused by endometriosis while seeking strategies in communicating these experiences within the public consciousness. The motherhood that wasn’t also acts as a catharsis, in which I mourn the choice my own body took from me.

Also known as Giclee prints or bubble-jet prints, pigment ink-jet prints are generated by computer printers from digital or scanned files using dye-based or pigment-based inks. A series of nozzles spray tiny droplets of ink onto the paper surface in a precise pattern that corresponds to the digital image file. In dye-based prints the ink soaks into the paper, whereas in pigment-based prints the ink rests and dries on top of the paper surface.
Whilst the term is broad, pigment ink-jet prints have come to be associated with prints produced on fine art papers. They are the most versatile and archival method of printing available to photographers today. A wide variety of material on which an image can be printed with such inks are available, including various textures and finishes such as matte photo paper, watercolour paper, cotton canvas or pre-coated canvas.
