Artist statement: This body of work seeks to explore the serenity experienced between the body and mind when all the immediate pressures and responsibilities of modern society fall away. It examines the space where respite is found.
Through my work I explore the relationship between ‘serenity and space’ and how that is reflective of where I find places to breathe. With analogue photography, I look at open, timeless landscapes, focusing on the emergence of line and form, and their natural recurrence in the land. I often choose to shoot vast, open, and seemingly empty spaces. For me, these are the places I can find calmness and respite from the constant connectedness of the modern world.
The experience of being a part of the landscape is more appreciated using manual photographic techniques. Unencumbered by using digital technologies, I make a conscious effort to work through the process of art making from beginning to end with minimal tech. This enables me to capture the space as it is, without embellishing.
Black-and-white film lends itself to my preferred subject matter due to its malleable tonal subtleties, creating light and darkness in areas that would otherwise be lost in the variations of colour.
