Critiquing the male gaze, I engaged with intimate processes and presentation methods. The work was analogue both in shooting and printing, maintaining ideas of traditionalism and control. I was inspired by the work of Cindy Sherman, specifically her 1977–1980 series, Untitled film stills. Her staged and cinematic aesthetics intertwined with depicting women limited by domestic roles inspired me to depict women oppressed by the same limitation but in a more disturbing way. Inspiration was also derived from Marcel Duchamp’s work ‘Nude descending a staircase’ in the physical alteration of the work, strengthening the unnatural and ominous aesthetic. The works were developed using the Van Dyke Brown process, which involved close manipulation and application of toxic chemicals and UV light exposure. The works are originals and difficult to repeat, alluding to the untouched and uncriticised male gaze, by depicting it as emotionless and menacing.
