Artist statement: Putuparri Tom Lawford grew up as part of an activist family and was raised by the old people on a cattle station on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert.
Putuparri’s people have lived in the desert of Western Australia for over 40,000 years, living a nomadic life knowing they could always retreat to their sacred waterholes. Putuparri is a cultural leader determined to keep his community's traditions alive.
This image is part of my ongoing Polaroid Project, which started in 1998. Participants are invited to etch their thoughts and comments in the wet emulsion of the large-format Polaroid film negative.
Voices of the Kimberley was commissioned by and in collaboration with AndProjects, EC West and the Kimberley Land Council.
