Artist statement: The delicate relationship we share with the planet has been disrupted. We mourn what once was, but constantly dismiss the opportunity to change.
A daguerreotype is a unique photographic object colloquially referred to as ‘a mirror with a memory’. This diptych of circular images offers a view of a world where time is characterised as cyclic rather than linear, with no beginning or end.
The work consists of two self-portraits fashioned entirely in-situ, depicting my inseparable connection with the environment, where the residue of one wholly pervades the other.
If you look carefully at the reflective surface, you may suddenly glimpse yourself appearing alongside my spectre, joint protagonists with shared responsibility as caretakers of this planet.
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive to where we started
And know the place for the first time
– TS Eliot
