My series Cocoon features three images: ‘Unity’, ‘Envision’, and ‘Reborn’. In a vibrant and surreal visual language, they examine the oppressive social conformity in China that demands strict unity among the younger generations of the country, confining them to rigid disciplines and preventing individualism.
Growing up in such rigorous social conformity, I have always felt the perplexity of my identity and individuality, which I only overcame after moving from China to Australia. Cocoon depicts my process of identity suppression, growing from envisioning an individuality to metaphorically being reborn after finding my identity. I felt like I was almost breaking free from a Cocoon that restrained me for so long, finally metamorphosing into a more complete version of myself.
