For the self-portrait series Flowing with the future (surviving Batman), I wore clothing created from lumen prints made on and with tommeginne Country, lutruwita/Tasmania. I then followed the path along the Mirrangbamum/Maribyrnong River that, in 1835, John Batman travelled before arriving at the Birrarung/Yarra River and determining a location for ‘settlement’. Batman had come by boat from the land of my ancestors, lutruwita, where he had been a bounty hunter. On this side of history, he’s described by many as the founding father of Naarm/Melbourne. This image explores my entanglement with history and time and the more than human kin I am surrounded by, while continually searching for a way to disrupt the ongoing colonial blockage.
