I’ve invited people into my home studio for years to sit for Vantages, recording two views of the sitter from different perspectives with a dual large-format camera. I like to think of the body as a record, our faces as much a part of us as our limbs and torso. When you’re photographed just as you are without the usual markers of wealth, class or time, there’s a sense of strength and presence in the photograph. As the film is exposed, the camera stands as a witness, and I share the space with the sitter. I see them with my own eyes instead of through a viewfinder, and in the moment, I offer up my presence.
