This is a portrait of artist and mental health activist Maya Tamang, also known as Miss Martha.
Miss Martha’s evocative artworks offer a raw and honest depiction of her personal struggle with mental health, while also delving into broader themes of female portraiture, self-image, societal pressures and fear of judgement. Her paintings aim to empower others through their authenticity and honesty.
I have photographed Miss Martha on several occasions, as she prepares to exhibit her work. I have witnessed her fear and vulnerability and also her courage and resilience. Her warmth, intelligence and unique view of the world make her a joy to photograph.
Miss Martha has been working with art therapist Robyn deVries for nine years. In a safe and nurturing environment, she has been able to gain the skills and confidence to be the artist and activist she innately knew she was.
