The Light path series explores what photography reflects, through the internal function of the camera. ‘Looking through’ continues my conceptual investigations into the process of making a photograph and the mirror’s role within it.
By photographically distorting old camera manuals, instructional images undergo a process of layering and abstraction. The light path is refracted at the moment of capture, challenging the original referent.
Mirrored wedges reference the path light travels when entering a camera’s lens; bouncing off the mirror to the viewfinder and back to be captured by the negative’s light-sensitive surface.
Light path was commissioned by Jake Treacy for The light draws along… at Incinerator Gallery (Melbourne) in 2024.
