Artist statement: The series, Bà Ngoại, translating to ‘Grandmother’, delves into the theme of my cultural heritage through layered photographic portraits, blending photographs of myself with ancestral figures from Vietnam, dating back to 1937. This series connects me with my great, great grandmother, great grandmother, and grandmother, emphasising the continuous thread of family legacy and cultural identity. Utilising digital photography techniques alongside historical photographs, the works employ double exposure and selective colour to highlight the traditional áo dài. This contrast emphasises the vivid cultural symbolism of the attire against a monochrome backdrop, showcasing the enduring vibrancy and relevance of heritage through generations.
